“Every year brings something new or different.” said owner Charlie Kuperus, “New challenges, new crops and new ideas in landscaping keep things fresh.” Incorporating fresh ideas into the family business has brought positive results. An example: Farmside’s expanding Fresh Cut flower products which are quickly coming into popular demand and which are incorporated into the floral designs of Farmside Florist. Grown right on site at the 175-acre family farm, these beautiful blooms are a cornerstone of the fresh floral arrangements and special occasion designs created in the family owned florist shop. Growing and harvesting the flowers on site means fresher arrangements that last longer and offer more value.
New ideas in landscaping are also being explored at Farmside Gardens. Most recently, Farmside has been working with customers who would like to explore ideas in “Edible Landscaping” –incorporating vegetables, herbs and edible plants into traditional landscape areas such as walkways and established perennial beds. “Vegetables and herbs not only produce food, they bring their own beauty and touch of the unexpected to your landscape.” Kuperus went on to say; “ We’ve adding beans, eggplant and other veggies to our own landscaped areas with great result.”
“Edible Landscaping” adds a practical and functional side to an already beautified space and offers other benefits to the more permanent features of your landscape. Best of all, incorporating herbs and vegetables into existing beds doesn’t require additional garden space or effort- giving you the benefit of fresh produce for the table and often an abundance to share. Farmside is happy to offer “Edible Landscape” tips and ideas and utilizes their on-site landscape as an interpretive garden display.
“Sharing the abundance” is an agricultural tradition and has been personal passion of Charlie’s throughout his career as NJ Secretary of Agriculture. “There is a need that has to be met,” he says, “There are many hungry, and many opportunities to share the abundance of our harvest-not just farmers-but anyone who gardens.”
As a supporter of the Sussex County Board of Agriculture’s PLANT A ROW for the HUNGRY (PAR), Kuperus Farmside Gardens has played an active role in bringing the PAR campaign to Sussex County and beyond. PLANT A ROW for the HUNGRY is a simple idea that can have powerful results. PLANT A ROW encourages gardeners to dedicate the harvest from one row, patio planter or garden section to sharing with a neighbor in need. The Sussex County Board of Agriculture site is being utilized to make PAR participation as easy as possible by offering gardening tips, suggested donation sites and even recipes for using fresh produce.
Farmside Gardens was one of the first businesses to support the initiative by making participation even easier-offering a free RAMAPO tomato plant to PAR participants who have registered on the site. The “Jersey Classic” RAMAPO tomato was recently reintroduced to the gardening world by Rutgers, in response to consumer demand for a more flavorful Jersey tomato. Ramapo tomatos, along with a full array of plants and garden supplies is available at Kuperus Farmside Gardens, Sussex NJ.
Sussex Naturally acknowledges Kuperus Farmside Gardens and Florist for their continued fresh approach to gardening and for their dedication to inspiring Sussex County gardeners with innovative ideas, education and quality products.
